The term “community” is often used to describe a city, town or burg, but “community” is the ideal term to describe Mason. This town of 2,100 residents is friendly and blessed with an abundance of natural beauty.
The locals know how to make visitors and newcomers alike feel welcome, right from the start.
On a recent trip to Mason, I marveled at the bustling town square. Friends were stopping to visit, tourists were shopping at gifts stores and real estate offices seems to have pleasant activity. A bicycle would be put to good use in Mason. The easily traveled size and ease of access to the necessities are a real plus.
The beauty of the Texas Hill Country provides an abundant life in Mason. Hunting is a major draw for visitors, as well as locally grown produce and beautiful Mason county Topaz. In the spring, bluebonnets blanket the countryside and even front lawns and fields.
Mason is well known as the home of the Eckert James River Cave Preserve. The Preserve is home to one of the world’s largest Mexican free-tail bat populations. It is an awesome sight to see these insect consuming bats emerge nightly during the mid-May to mid-October season. The Preserve is a joint effort of The Nature Conservancy of Texas and Bat Conservation International.
Mason Town Square, www.masontxcoc.com
Mason is named for Fort Mason which was created in 1848 to protect settlers from Indians. The Fort received its name in honor or Lt George Mason. From these origins, Mason has grown to be a center of ranching, agriculture and hunting. While many come to Mason in search of something…topaz, great hunting or a rich heritage, all find this Gem of The Hill Country and the rich treasure it has in store for those who take the time to look for it.
